Politics can be overwhelming until you understand the process so we made a free digital brochure that breaks it down to a local level.

Blackfalds, Three Hills, and Red Deer all had an opportunity to vote in an upcoming local election so we targeted our brochures and ads to them. Often people don’t bother to exercise their right to vote outside of federal or provincial elections and we wanted to sway that mentality. If anything, voting in your local elections has a greater impact on your own life!

Digital Ads

We chose to approach the ads in three ways. The first didn’t mention the free aspect on the image—though it would mention it in the Meta copy—and reflected the visual style of the brochure directly in the ad. The second gave a sneak peak into the brochure and used a bolder colour while keeping the text simple. The third is bright and makes sure you know the guide is free while showing off the cover.

One hurdle for Community Strong is that people sometimes view their brand as too corporate. My hope with options two and three was to prevent that impression while still looking legitimate.

The Digital Brochure

Trying to simplify the political process into something digestible was quite a task. Freelance writer Susan Thompson did an excellent job wordsmithing it but the visual execution was up to me. Not having to worry about printing costs thanks to it’s digital nature, I broke the text up heavily. This allowed me to hit important points home using illustrations and infographics while providing content breaks with pull quotes. There may be a lot of pages but the experience is easily scrollable and offers a huge amount of info as a stepping stone to understanding how the political machinations of your local office effect you day to day.

Learning Outcomes

There may not have been a lot of revolutionary learnings from this project but everything is a chance to stretch the creative muscles. If I had another stab at it, I think I would exaggerate the illustrated characters features even more. I developed that style very quickly thanks to the turnaround time but, with more time to ponder, stronger balance would have elevated this.
